So…if you are wondering what ethnicity 96.2% of Taiwan is composed of, now you know. We are proud «Rest Ofs »😂
We can give Taiwan a new nickname: the Island of Leftovers. Our new slogan: I don’t know where it’s from…but it’s probably still good.
Ok. I get it that the Taiwanese don’t want to be Chinese but you can at least list the ethnicity as Han, right? Nope, we have too much Taiwanese consciousness to do that. Oh and make sure the photo of the indigenous ppl we use are wearing their Garb to make it as clear as possible we are not CHOYNA!
The politically-driven desinification efforts means the copy was tortured to give the impression that Taiwan is a vibrant multicultural melting pot when in fact until the 90s it was a full-on jus sanguinis ethno-state where proving you have Han ancestry got you an automatic passport more or less.
All this changed of course, when we democratized and the Pro-independence party DPP started taking power. But note: Taiwan’s super strict immigration policies didn’t relax. You just don’t get the « you’re Han you’re family » golden ticket any more.
By the way, total waishengren erasure. You can be Holo or Hakka (bizarrely Mongolian-Tibetan mentioned) but Waishengren (ppl who arrived from China after WWIi) are not mentioned, unless you lump them in with « New residents come from mainland China and the Hong Kong/Macau region »
Make no mistake…Taiwan is one of the most ethnically homogenous places on earth. The percentage of Han ethnicity here is higher than in China itself. And it’s staying that way, making the vibrant multicultural BS nothing more than Cosplay.
We are Taiwanese. We have always been Taiwanese. Where do we come from? We don’t know.🤷♀️
