🇺🇦 Zelensky rejects US plan for Ukrainian troop withdrawal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected a US proposal that would require Ukrainian troop withdrawals without a corresponding Russian pullback, calling it unacceptable during comments to reporters on December 20 after talks with American officials.
Zelensky said the toughest issues in the ongoing negotiations remain territorial control, the status of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and financing for reconstruction. He specifically dismissed a Trump administration idea to establish a “free economic zone” in Donetsk Oblast, arguing that any territorial compromise must be based on current battle lines and involve mutual withdrawals.
At the same time, Zelensky expressed confidence that the United States and Donald Trump have the strength needed to end the war, even as Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to push maximalist demands that Ukraine relinquish the entire Donbas region.
