The Before and After of the Excavation of the Ancient Greek Stadium of Magnesia ad Maeandrum, located in modern-day Aydin, Turkey. The 200-meter (656-foot) long and 85-meter (279-foot) wide stadium was built sometime in the 1st century A.D. and had a maximum of 52 stairs, which provided the capacity to accommodate approximately 30,000 spectators. It was used primarily for a variety of competitions such as horse races, running competitions, boxing matches, and gladiator games. In 1984, Dr. Orhan Bingöl and his team from the University of Ankara began excavating the site, which was buried under several meters of clay. As of today, parts of the stadium are still buried.
