The colossal monolithic heads of the Olmecs weigh between 6 and 50 tonnes for a size of up to 3.40m. These sculptures all represent anthropomorphic male characters whose meaning and context of use are unknown.
The very first head was discovered in the mid-19th century at the site of Tres Zapotes. To date, there are 17 heads spread across 4 sites.
