Inside, he organized a secret group that grew to almost a thousand members, working together to report on the atrocities, including the murder and cremation of Jewish prisoners, and organizing daring escapes for some.

Pilecki's reports were crucial to the Allies during WWII. He escaped in 1943 to continue fighting with the Polish resistance.

After the war, when Poland fell under Soviet control, Pilecki was falsely accused of treason, tried, and executed in 1947.

He faced his execution with courage, expressing a preference for joy over fear at his death. Pilecki's remarkable story remained hidden until the 1990s when it was finally revealed, astonishing even his grown children.
