Is China behind the rise in long-term US yields? There has recently been a correlation break on the bond market between yields and fears of recession. China still held US bonds worth $761bn in Jan, but has been buying more gold since 2022. Beijing could use sales to put pressure on Donald Trump, as he cannot afford for yields to continue to rise. At $1.2tn, the cost of servicing the debt is already higher than the defense budget.
