In it, I argue that Israel should be doing everything it can to avoid civilian casualties and keep the Iranian people, who are the biggest victims of this brutal and oppressive regime, out of the crosshairs. This makes sense not only from a humanitarian perspective, but strategically too. The past three decades of military intervention in the Middle East have taught us that regime change, if that is indeed Israel’s goal, cannot be imposed from outside. It must come from within, and Israel risks alienating the very constituency it needs to get the job done.
