Yu Luoke was only 23 when he was executed in 1970 during the Cultural Revolution. A victim of Mao’s “theory of lineage” (血统论), Yu was barred from college and disqualified from joining the Red Guards solely because of his lineage. His father had been purged as a “Rightist” in the 1958 Anti-Rightist Campaign, and that political label was treated as hereditary, passed down to the son.
In 1967, Yu published an article in a Red Guard newspaper directly challenging CCP’s “theory of lineage” arguing that guilt and virtue cannot be inherited and that people should be judged by their actions, not by bloodline. For stating this simple moral truth, he was branded a counterrevolutionary and sentenced to death.
Yu Luoke’s insistence that “a person’s political stance is not determined by his lineage, but by his thinking and his actions” remains relevant today. In America, those with the “right” pedigree may despise and hate the nation, while later immigrants—by choice, not birth—often become the firmest defenders of the Republic.
