In the statement, the EU Delegation also raised concerns and called for the immediate and unconditional release of 39 prisoners of conscience, including #ZhangYadi, and expressed concern over the disappearance of the 11th Panchen Lama.
In response, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for @MFA_China , condemned the statement at a press briefing the following day, asserting that the EU “is no position to ‘lecture’ other countries on human rights, much less to be a ‘defender of human rights.’” Guo further urged the EU to “engage in serious self-reflection” and to “view objectively the achievements China has made in the field of human rights.”
