Dennis Craig Wilder published an op-ed in the Chinese state media this May, 2026.

To publish in Chinese state media in May 2026, and in particular to publish an article that boosts the CCP's pro-engagement argument, is quite a choice, especially for a former CIA/NSC China director. This is not 2006 or even 2016. It's 2026, and a U.S. 'authority' is allowing himself to be a CCP mouthpiece in Chinese state media.

Now, Dennis disfavors this @LenczyckiPhilip article about how a 2x US Cabinet official had multiple undisclosed roles and ties with the Chinese gov't and intelligence apparatus. Dennis is skipping all argumentation and debate and going straight to launching an ad hominem attack against the @DailyCaller article, saying it must be racism to ponder why a 2x US cabinet official would have these state and intelligence roles, and then not disclose them during Senate confirmation hearing.

Ironically, in his last tweet before attacking the article about Elaine Chao, Dennis boosts the writing of an MSS agent who is pushing a particular framing of U.S.-China relations. So to recap, a former NSC China director signal boosts an MSS publication that frames US-China relations, and then calls an American writer racist for asking why a U.S. Cabinet official would hold Chinese government and intelligence roles.

Notably, the whole argument that everything is racism flows from Chinese state media and united front talking points. The CCP describes anything that challenges their broad influence operations, human rights abuses, genocide, aggression towards it's neighbors, and theft of American IP is considered racist.

@dennisw5, since you are a former IC professional, could you help us understand the baselines here for when questions about CCP/PRC ties stop being racist and start being a legitimate subject for inquiry?

What is the threshold for the number of Chinese state & intel roles that a US Cabinet official can hold before it stops being racism and starts being an issue we should ask public questions about? Apparently the alleged 4 roles held by Chao are not enough to overcome a a racial bias, but there must be some amount of CCP intel and government ties that is unacceptable.

Having served in the CIA and been the NSC China director, I'm sure Dennis has spent days pondering how much undisclosed cooperation with the Chinese state and united front intelligence apparatus would constitute too much. Would 7 roles be too many? Would 10? Or do you need to have 15 such roles before it stops being 'a racism?'

Alternatively, Dennis, if you want to argue the substance of the article, that might be interesting as well. It seems like some of Chao's alleged PRC/CCP activity overlapped with your time in the IC, so I'd be interested to hear your opinion on the substance of the article.

But if you don't want to debate the substance, we would all greatly appreciate learning how many CCP state/intel roles it takes for an investigation to stop being racist and to start being a security issue we should ponder and debate publicly.

As mentioned earlier, Dennis' talking points happen to be CCP state media talking points. And notably, Dennis is something of a darling of Chinese state media. But that must be all coincidental, because a former CIA/NSC China official would never allow himself to be a functional CCP mouthpiece repeatedly quoted and published in Chinese state media while signal-boosting an MSS operative and attacking American investigative journalists.
