At 14, he lost his father aboard Flight 11 on 9/11. Today, he sits in the cockpit of the exact same airline.

On September 10, 2001, the McGuinness family gathered around the table to celebrate Thomas McGuinness Sr.’s 42nd birthday over his favorite homemade cheesecake.

Less than 24 hours later, 14-year-old Tommy was pulled out of class. Walking down his school hallway, he saw his mother’s face and heard the five words that shattered his world:

“Jesus called daddy home.”

His father was the First Officer aboard American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane to strike the World Trade Center.

In the painful days that followed, Tommy and his family flipped through his father’s well-worn Bible. Tucked between the pages, they found a forgotten, handwritten note from Thomas Sr. that read:( paraphrasing)

“I want to be like Jesus, because my son wants to be like me.”

Tragedy has a way of altering our trajectory, but Tommy chose to let his father’s example - not the grief - define his path. He didn't fear the sky.

He pursued aviation, pushing through years of rigorous training. During flight school, he had to study the events of 9/11 as a case study, analyzing the horror his father experienced through the eyes of a pilot. Yet, supported by a brotherhood of aviators who rallied around him, he kept going.

When American Airlines finally lifted its decade-long hiring freeze, Tommy was among the first in line.

Today - 25 years after that heartbreaking morning - Tom McGuinness Jr. flies as a pilot for American Airlines, wearing the exact same uniform his father wore.

“Every time I put on this uniform, and how I treat people in this uniform, is honoring his legacy.”

Thomas McGuinness Sr. never got to see his son earn his wings. But every time Tommy takes off, he carries his father's memory straight into the clouds.
