You may know him from Fargo or Mr Deeds or the Sopranos. In 1976 at the age of 18, he took the FDNY civil test and became a firefighter in NYC. For 4 hectic and busy years he serviced one of the busiest stations in all of NYC, Engine Co. 55 in Little Italy of Manhattan. He would later leave to become a famous and successful actor, writer and director but he never forgot his brothers at the station.
Watching in horror as the events unfolded on 9/11, he made a decision. On 9/12 he went back to his old station, and for several days after he worked grueling and heartbreaking 12 hour shifts. Searching through the rubble and sitting and digging, looking for survivors. There are very few videos and pictures of him doing this because he declined the photos, this wasn’t a photo opportunity for him. He was there for a reason and the reason wasn’t self serving publicity. We all know him as Steve Buscemi but down at the station of Engine Co. 55 he’s affectionately known as Brother Buscemi.
