In an interview, Kylian Mbappé casually said his favorite meme was his face put on “some guy, I think he’s a Chinese dictator.” The image was the well-known Mao face-swap.
Within hours Chinese brands (Dongpeng, Mengniu, Milkground etc.) terminated partnerships, state TV suspended La Liga coverage involving him, and his Chinese social media accounts were muted.
The Foreign Ministry stated that such remarks “hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.”
Mbappé quickly issued a trilingual apology calling the comment “ill-judged” and expressing “deep respect.”
Chinese netizens were not impressed:
“Not accepted. Not forgiven!!”
“He doesn’t know he’s wrong — he knows he’s scared and the money is gone.”
“Don’t ever come to China.”
“Extremely serious wrong remarks that crossed the red line.”
One light-hearted meme about a historical figure was treated as a national incident. The commercial and media response was immediate and coordinated.
