It’s not just about oil, which Venezuela already has plenty, it’s really about challenging U.S. power in the Western Hemisphere, creating another strategic distraction for the U.S.
UK participation in a counter action questionable, b/c the Monroe Doctrine was originally a British proposal to the U.S. aiming at preventing the Holy Alliance from taking over Latin America, Secy John Quincy Adams said good idea on the counter-Holy Alliance part but we wanted to do it alone without you Brits, or any other Europeans.
