On Wednesday, China abruptly declared a military exercise zone 40 nautical miles off Taiwan’s southern coast, citing “shooting drills” as the reason.

Taiwan's defense ministry reports that 45 Chinese military aircraft and 14 naval ships have been spotted around the country.

Taiwan has deployed its own ships to monitor the situation and says it remains on high alert.
