It was a profound honor to stand with the legendary Joan Baez, holding a call for the release of Zhang Yadi.
Joan’s song “China” mourned the students killed in Tiananmen Square for a free China— a struggle that shaped my life. Decades later, Yadi carried that same memory forward: on her Twitter @tarafreesoul, she wrote about mourning those students and dedicating herself to building bridges between Tibetans and Han Chinese.
Instead of starting her master’s in anthropology at SOAS, Yadi has been disappeared in China since July. She now faces years in prison for her peaceful activism.
Together with Joan Baez, whose voice has carried freedom’s call across generations, we demand the immediate release of Zhang Yadi and stand with all who refuse to be silenced.
