I'm stunned that this New York Times article, about the challenges faced by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, neglects to mention China even once.

Many Chinese companies are outcompeting German companies, the country's trade deficit with China is widening, Germany's supply chain is vulnerable to Chinese withholding of critical components. Moreover, China is Russia's most important partner in the war in Ukraine -- and a war over Taiwan would have massive implications for Germany.

"Europe," the article states, "is caught between a militarily aggressive Russia and a rhetorically hostile American administration that no longer wants to guarantee European security." This is not 1995. China deserves a place in these articles.
