Images of an ill-fated Argentine TAM tank after a Chinese-made Norinco 105mm APFSDS shells malfunctioned and caused barrel damage are now circulating online.
This is after reports of a similar incident with Thailand's own Norinco VT-4 Main Battle tank suffering a terrible malfunction while deployed in combat with Cambodia.
Commenters are quick to point out that Chinese tech still lags behind in terms of quality despite having developed more complex equipment like their 5th Gen warplanes.
This is not surprising, IMO. Chinese defense equipment rarely sees continuous export success due to several issues.
What surprises me is Thailand's decision to select the VT-4 despite their bad experience with the Chinese-made Type 69-II main battle tanks.
The Type 69-II were commissioned in 1987 but were prematurely decommissioned by 2010 due to a persistent lack of spare parts, maintenance issues and more-- making them unsuitable for effective military use.
Well, at least they are now helping Thailand's natural environment/economy as the Thais decided to dump them in the ocean to serve as artificial reefs 😅
