In China, EV fire risk has become serious enough that regulators are targeting significantly higher safety standards by 2027.
One proposed engineering solution circulating in industry discussions:
Active battery-pack ejection upon thermal runaway detection.
From a systems perspective, this converts an internal failure mode into an external hazard — transferring risk from the vehicle to the surrounding environment.
It doesn’t eliminate the fire.
It repositions it. Possibly at an intersection. Possibly next to other EVs.
This is safety engineering with Chinese characteristics:
meet the spec, pass the inspection, externalize the consequence.
Technically compliant. Operationally questionable.
Spectacular by design.
