Europe, America, and China has the potential to go down just like the Greek city states, Macedonia, and Rome. Macedonia, a cultural backwater, comes to dominate Greek civilization because it's bigger. It asserts hegemony over the Greek city states, at first ostensibly to protect them all from Persia (Soviet Union). But the Greek city states never accept their status, instead always looking down on the savage Macedonians and hearkening back to their own more storied past. They create leagues (the EU) to try to assert their independence. But the world has moved on, and they no longer possess the martial size, strength, or ethic to defend themselves. So when Macedonian King Philip V makes a move against them, what do they do? They call in the Romans. The Romans defeat the Macedonians. And the Romans annex Macedonia. Then two years later, the Romans defeat the leagues and annex all of Greece.
