A town in Japan has cancelled its annual cherry blossom festival after a wave of badly behaved tourists disrupted daily life for residents.
Authorities in Fujiyoshida said visitors were repeatedly trespassing on private property, leaving rubbish behind, and in some cases defecating in residential yards, prompting numerous complaints from locals.
Officials noted that the incidents were linked to a recent surge in visitors from a single overseas market — raising the question of which country’s tourists have become such a strain on local communities.
