In August 2015, at age 17, Yusra and her older sister Sara fled the Syrian civil war.
They reached Turkey and boarded an overcrowded inflatable dinghy (designed for 6-7 people but carrying about 20 refugees) heading across the Aegean Sea to the Greek island of Lesbos.
About 20-30 minutes into the crossing, the engine failed, and the boat began taking on water and sinking. Most passengers couldn't swim. Yusra, Sara (also a swimmer), and two other capable swimmers jumped into the sea. They grabbed ropes or the sides and swam/pushed/pullled the boat for over three hours (accounts vary slightly from 3 to 3.5 hours) until they reached safety on Lesbos. This effort kept the boat afloat and prevented it from capsizing, saving everyone on board, including themselves.
Yusra later made her way to Germany, resumed training, and was selected for the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team (under the Olympic flag). She competed in swimming at the 2016 Rio Olympics (women's 100m butterfly and freestyle events) and again with the Refugee Olympic Team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
