Hate to break your bubble, but this is just basic supply and demand. In China, there are more men than women, so women naturally have the upper hand in the dating market.
It’s not just about 彩礼 (bride price) hitting hundreds of thousands of yuan, height, income, education and genetics all come into play. And then you add 户口 into the mix.
A Hukou system from top-tier cities like Beijing or Shanghai is basically a multiplier because it gives access to better schools, healthcare and job opportunities. That alone raises someone’s value in the marriage market.
On top of that, northern populations, which are overrepresented in these major cities, also tend to be taller on average, so you get this compounding effect where location, hukou, height and income all stack together.
Call it natural selection if you want, but it’s really demographics, policy and economics reinforcing each other.
