Hong Kong activist Keung Ka Wai, a leader of a pro-democracy advocacy group in Canada, was intentionally struck by a vehicle in Vancouver in what appears to be another alarming case of China’s transnational repression targeting dissidents abroad.
The incident came just one day after he was harassed by the individual seen in the photo on the left during a protest outside the Chinese consulate. Police attended the scene to ensure protesters’ safety, but after officers left, Keung realized he was being followed. The following day, he was attacked.
This incident once again raises serious concerns about the Chinese Communist Party’s growing ability to intimidate and target critics even on Canadian soil. It increasingly appears that Beijing believes it can act with impunity in Canada while Ottawa continues pursuing engagement with the regime that Prime Minister Mark Carney once called a “strategic partner.”
Despite everything China has done to Canada, Ottawa is still preparing to welcome Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for an official visit tomorrow, while Carney is even planning to go hiking with him.
Shame on Canada.
