Europeans and Americans are inclined to view China as a society that has been mired in authoritarianism since time immemorial. In my recent book I argue that picture is simply not true-people living in China do not care any less about personal dignity, autonomy and freedom than human beings living anywhere else on earth. As proof I offer the history of the Warring States Period. The crisis of that era brought violent, profound, and enduring changes to Chinese society, but those changes entailed sharing and limiting state power as much as centralizing and concentrating it.
