Two members of North Korea’s Asian Games delegation in Nagoya have already said they do not want to go home.
South Korea’s Monthly Chosun, citing a source tied to Japan’s Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office and the Chongryon community, reports that the pair have voiced a wish to seek asylum in Japan — not South Korea.
Identities and roles inside the ~180-person delegation have not been disclosed. It is still unclear whether this becomes a formal application or another story that disappears when the team flies back.
This is North Korea’s largest sports delegation to Japan in 41 years. Japan normally bars North Korean nationals.
An exception was made for the Games.
Sports Minister Kim Il-guk is in the country.
