China won an Asian Games bronze and still could not get through a penalty shootout without the benches emptying.
Toyota Stadium, men’s football bronze-medal match. China 2–2 Uzbekistan after 90 minutes. No extra time. Straight to penalties. Goalkeeper Li Hao saved two. After Xiang Yuwang put China ahead, Uzbekistan’s Ashirbek Jumaev walked up to him. Liu Haofan stepped in.
Both benches ran onto the pitch. One yellow each. The shootout restarted. Peng Xiao scored the winner, 4–3. First men’s football medal since 1998.
Japanese coverage led with the brawl in the middle of the shootout. The Chinese medal write-up skipped it. On Chinese fan boards the yellow was the good part: “That card was for standing up for a teammate. If they’re yapping, you go at them.”
A third-place game, already won on the board, and the answer was still a pile-on. The medal went on the podium. The instinct did not. That is the distance left to a place where a game stays a game.
