A 39-year-old woman was found strangled in a Naha hotel room before dawn on 3 October. Okinawa police have arrested a 20-year-old US Marine, Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard of Futenma, on suspicion of robbery-murder. He denies it.
Anna Yagi entered the Naminoue Crystal Hotel with a man around 2:10 a.m. Staff found her after checkout. Cause of death: asphyxiation. Her wallet and backpack were later found nearby. CCTV reportedly shows the man leaving alone with her things.
PM Takaichi called it “extremely brutal,” protested to Washington, and demanded the US enforce discipline.
This is the latest in a long line of crimes tied to the US presence on Okinawa, which hosts the bulk of American forces in Japan. In 1995 three servicemen raped a 12-year-old. In 2016 a former Marine was convicted of raping and murdering 20-year-old Rina Shimabukuro.
Her brother: the family is grieving. Their parents are crushed.
