Sir Patrick Stewart, the legendary British actor best known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation (and later Star Trek: Picard) and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, has died at the age of 86.
He passed away on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at his home in Los Angeles, in the care of his wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
The family announced the news via his social media, noting he was surrounded by family, friends, live music, prayers, tears, and laughter. They asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s research and caregiver support organisations.
A classically trained stage actor who spent nearly two decades with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Stewart brought Shakespearean depth and dignity to iconic screen roles.
He will be remembered for his commanding voice, moral presence, and decades of work on stage and screen. He is survived by his wife Sunny Ozell and his children Daniel and Sophia from his first marriage.
