It's not everyday I get trolled by someone with an OAM. This seems to be a real account by a real person, who was indeed awarded an OAM back in 2003. Timothy Looker has been profiled by the ABC as recently as last year for what looks to be a long and admirable history of volunteer work with legal aid and NGOs like the YMCA. He looks more like a kindly grandfather than someone who would target and abuse a woman who survived 2+ years wrongfully imprisoned in a foreign hellhole. A cursory glance at his X feed shows an obsession with "Zionists" and other unhinged conspiracy theories that proliferate in parts of the internet not typically frequented by 70+ year olds. This doesn't make me angry, it makes me profoundly sad. This is an otherwise upstanding member of our community with decades of community service who has seemingly been sucked into a funnel of hate and extremism on this platform and elsewhere. A sobering reminder that toxic online echo chambers affect all of us, not just the young and impressionable. It has never been more urgent to bring big tech and big social media to heel than now.
