“Yesterday at the Tianjin Marathon, this guy posted several photos of himself, including this one. Today his account was permanently banned.”
The hand gesture he’s making is the classic “rock on” / devil horns sign (index + pinky up). It’s used worldwide in metal concerts, sports, and casual photos. In American Sign Language it’s also “I love you.”
No one on the Chinese internet could figure out what it “stood for.” So the censorship machine did what it always does when it doesn’t understand something: it acted safer than sorry and permanently killed the account.
This is the daily reality of Chinese social media. A runner finishing a marathon, making a common hand sign that has nothing to do with politics, and getting his account wiped because the filters and censors couldn’t parse a global gesture.
When even a meaningless rock hand sign can get you permanently banned, the system isn’t protecting “stability.” It’s just operating on pure paranoia.
