Public Safety Advisory for those staying in China.
There are reports of a scam targeting individuals through seemingly friendly meetups.
The setup is simple:
Someone you haven’t seen in a long time reaches out and invites you to dinner. During the meal, your food or drink may be secretly spiked with illegal substances. Authorities are then alerted, and you could find yourself facing serious legal trouble — including detention — unless you pay a large sum of money.
How to protect yourself:
•Be cautious about sudden invitations from distant acquaintances.
•Do not leave your food or drinks unattended.
•Avoid consuming items you did not personally order or open.
•If you feel unwell or suspect tampering, seek medical help immediately and document everything.
•Inform trusted contacts of your location when meeting someone after a long time.
Regardless of where you are, personal vigilance is essential. Legal consequences involving controlled substances can be severe, and prevention is far easier than dealing with the aftermath.
Stay alert. Share responsibly.
