Fake Chinese accounts not only didn't sway the Japanese elections, it only boosted 🇯🇵 PM Takaichi's election win.
The effectiveness of psyops is inversely proportional to the awareness that it is being employed.
The Japanese have the advantage in that their language barrier is difficult to overcome. These posts exhibited awkward phrasing and linguistic quirks that suggested machine translation, as well as the use of simplified Chinese characters not found in Japan. The account names blended Japanese katakana script with Chinese characters, known as kanji.
Roughly one-third of the accounts generated original posts, while the rest amplified them through reposts. Most had only a few entries each, a pattern deployed to avoid detection.
Also, to be REALLY good at creating effective propaganda, one must have a deep understanding of the perspectives and psychographics of one's target audience. Instead, Chinese campaigns just repeat narratives that satisfy the CCP's own perspective and view of the world which everyone can see through.
No wonder it failed.
