German authorities have detained a husband and wife, Xuejun C. and Hua S., who hold German citizenship, on suspicion of long-term espionage on behalf of Beijing.
For years, the pair collected sensitive information on dual-use technologies, particularly in aviation, aerospace, IT, and artificial intelligence. They operated under the cover of translators and automotive industry employees to approach German scientists.
Investigators say the couple invited researchers to China for supposedly “civilian” paid lectures, which in fact took place before representatives of Chinese state defense companies.
