Chinese man murdered Chinese student in Korean. Chinese media: Korea is not safe!

A 25-year-old Chinese graduate student from Changchun flew back to South Korea on 14 August for one reason: collect her diploma from Daegu Catholic University so she could start a job already waiting in China.

Flight home was booked for 23 August. She lost contact on 20 August, the day of the ceremony.

On 21 August a man reported her missing and told police he was her boyfriend. On 25 August her body was found at his home in Gyeongsan.

He was arrested the same day. Police say CCTV shows them entering his residence together around 2 p.m. on the 20th; later he left dressed as a woman, turned off her phone, changed clothes at a Dongdaegu Station restroom, and returned.

They are examining whether he killed her and then delayed the report by a day to interfere with the investigation. Reports also say parts of the body were mutilated and discarded.

The suspect is Zheng Changsheng (郑昌圣 / Jeong Chang-seong), a Chinese national in his 30s, ethnic Korean (Joseonjok), with Korean permanent residency—not citizenship.

He was a lecturer at her university (neuroanatomy / rehabilitation therapy) and had taught her class. Multiple accounts say the “boyfriend” claim was one-sided; they were not in a relationship.

Former students have alleged he previously harassed female students and threatened to delay or block graduation. Police have not announced a confirmed motive.

Then the narrative.

When a Chinese woman is killed in Korea, the opening script is usually ready: Korea is unsafe, Chinese women should not go abroad, don’t chase Hallyu, stay home, marry a Chinese man, have children. Some accounts go further and smear the victim.

That package only works if the killer is Korean—or at least foreign.

The killer is Chinese.

Same ethnicity as the official “in-group,” same passport, teacher-student acquaintance, Korean PR but not Korean.

So the Korea-security / don’t-go-abroad / mock-Korean-feminism line is suddenly useless.

Official coverage shrinks to the consulate line: demand a thorough investigation and severe punishment, assist the family. State media stays procedural.

The cultural sermons vanish. Hot searches cool. If there is no new usable enemy, the story is managed downward.

That is the tell. The outrage was never mainly about the dead student. It was about which nationality could be blamed.
