Tomorrow, October 6, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., a federal court is scheduled to sentence former Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang, the Chinese American former mayor who pleaded guilty to acting as an undeclared agent of the Chinese government. She faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Defendant: Eileen Wang, former Mayor of Arcadia, California. She resigned as mayor and from the Arcadia City Council on May 11, 2026.
On May 29, she pleaded guilty in federal court in Los Angeles to one felony count of acting as an unlawful agent of a foreign government within the United States, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 951.
According to prosecutors, from late 2020 through 2022—before she took public office—Wang and her then-fiancé, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, operated a Chinese-language website called the U.S. News Center. Prosecutors alleged that, at the direction of Chinese government officials, they published pro-Beijing content without registering or otherwise complying with the disclosure requirements under U.S. law.
Sun pleaded guilty to the same offense and was sentenced to four years in federal prison.
Tomorrow’s hearing: The sentencing hearing is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on October 6 before U.S. District Judge Wesley L. Hsu in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in downtown Los Angeles.
The statutory maximum penalty is 10 years in prison, followed by up to three years of supervised release.
Wang is currently free on a $25,000 bond. As of October 5, court records still list her sentencing hearing as scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on October 6, 2026.
