Post 1990s: Beijing approves the J-20. Officials gather around a model and call it China’s own fifth-gen fighter.
11 January 2011: the J-20 flies for about 15 minutes out of Chengdu. The flight lands in the middle of US Defense Secretary Robert Gates’s visit. Hu Jintao tells Gates it has nothing to do with the trip.
January 2025: Yang Wei, chief designer of the J-20, is removed as AVIC vice general manager. His bio is wiped from the company site. Last public appearance: 31 October 2024.
March 2026: his name is scrubbed from the Chinese Academy of Sciences roster. No charge has been published. His former boss, ex-AVIC chairman Tan Ruisong, was sentenced in March 2026 to death with a two-year reprieve for corruption.
